Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

A UNESCO-listed colonial port town of candy-colored houses and centuries-old shipbuilding heritage on Nova Scotia's south shore

About the Port

Set on a grid plan laid out by British colonial planners in the 18th century, Lunenburg preserves one of North America's most complete examples of a planned colonial settlement. Roughly 70 percent of its wooden buildings date from the 1700s and 1800s, their bright facades lining streets that slope toward a working harbor once central to shipbuilding and, in leaner years, rum-running. The Old Town's UNESCO World Heritage status reflects this remarkable continuity of architecture and layout.

Landmarks within easy walking distance of the waterfront include the Victorian-era Lunenburg Academy overlooking the town, the ornate pink Wedding Cake House, and St. John's Anglican Church, whose origins trace to the 1700s. Fishing boats and tall ships still share the harbor, a reminder of the town's maritime livelihood. Compact and walkable, Lunenburg rewards unhurried exploring, with galleries, seafood shacks, and craft studios tucked into former merchant buildings along its historic core.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Lunenburg.

Tour the Fisheries Museum

Housed in a former fish-processing plant on the waterfront, this museum traces Lunenburg's shipbuilding and Grand Banks fishing heritage through vessels, gear, and an aquarium touch tank. Budget an hour or so, an easy walk from the docks.

Spot the Bluenose II

This iconic schooner replica, based in Lunenburg when not sailing, appears on the Canadian dime and embodies the town's racing and fishing legacy. Check ahead, as harbor tours or dockside viewing depend on her sailing schedule.

Wander the Colorful Waterfront

Stroll the sloping streets past saltbox houses in mustard, teal, and crimson, then settle into a seafood shack for chowder or fresh-caught haddock overlooking the working harbor.
