Egypt · Cruise Port Guide

Luxor

Ancient Thebes rises along the Nile, where temple pylons and royal tombs hold Egypt's most storied ruins.

About the Port

Luxor spreads across the site of ancient Thebes, once the capital of pharaonic Egypt, straddling the Nile between a bustling east bank and a quiet, desert-backed west. On the east bank, Luxor Temple stands within easy walking distance of the riverfront, its colonnades and colossal statues illuminated against the modern town after dark. Karnak Temple, a sprawling complex built up over centuries, lies a short drive away and remains among the largest religious sites ever constructed.

Across the river, the West Bank holds the Valley of the Kings, where painted tombs of New Kingdom pharaohs descend into the rock, and the Valley of the Nobles, whose more intimate chambers depict scenes of daily life in vivid color. Nearby, the former home of archaeologist Howard Carter offers a glimpse into the excavations that brought Tutankhamun's treasures to light. Together these sites make Luxor an essential stop for tracing Egypt's ancient history firsthand.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Luxor.

Float Over the Necropolis by Balloon

Sunrise hot-air balloon flights lift off from the West Bank for sweeping views over the Valley of the Kings and the green Nile floodplain; flights last about 45 minutes and require early pre-dawn pickup and advance booking.

See the Colossi of Memnon

Two 60-foot stone pharaohs have guarded the West Bank fields for over 3,400 years and sit right along the road to the Valley of the Kings, making them an easy add-on stop.

Visit Hatshepsut's Temple at Deir el-Bahari

This terraced mortuary temple rises dramatically against limestone cliffs and honors one of Egypt's few female pharaohs; pair it with nearby Valley of the Kings visits to save transit time.
