Machu Picchu-Cusco

The lost citadel of the Inca Empire, cradled in cloud forest above the Sacred Valley of Peru

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Machu Picchu crowns a ridge high above the Urubamba River, its stone terraces and temples built by the Inca in the fifteenth century and rediscovered by the outside world in the early twentieth. Wrapped in cloud forest and framed by the peaks of Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu mountain, the citadel remains one of South America's most striking examples of Inca engineering and stonework. Nearby Cusco, once the capital of the Inca Empire, blends colonial architecture with Andean foundations and serves as the traditional gateway to the region.

Travelers typically reach the ruins by rail from the Sacred Valley to the town of Aguas Calientes, followed by a short bus transfer up the mountainside, since no roads lead directly to the site. Early morning visits offer quieter paths and the chance to watch light spread slowly across the terraces. Aguas Calientes itself, with its market stalls and mountain trails, makes a pleasant base for those extending their stay before returning to Cusco.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Machu Picchu-Cusco.

Catch Sunrise Over the Citadel

Arrive early via the first buses from Aguas Calientes to watch light spread across the terraces before crowds build; the ridge and surrounding peaks emerge slowly from cloud forest mist.

Explore Cusco's Old Quarter

Wander cobbled streets and colonial plazas built atop Inca stone foundations, including the Qorikancha temple, before or after the rail journey to the Sacred Valley.

Stroll Aguas Calientes

Browse market stalls and boutiques or follow a short mountain trail in this riverside town, a relaxed base before the bus climb to the ruins.
