About Moremi
Moremi Game Reserve protects the central and eastern reaches of the Okavango Delta, and many longtime safari hands rank it among the most beautiful reserves in Africa. Set aside in the 1960s at the urging of the local BaTawana people, Moremi gathers every delta landscape into one protected sweep — papyrus channels and glittering lagoons, seasonal floodplains, island palm groves, and dry peninsulas of mopane forest.
The variety of habitat drives an equal variety of wildlife. Moremi supports dense populations of elephant, buffalo, giraffe, and antelope from tiny steenbok to splashing red lechwe, and its predator viewing — lion, leopard, cheetah, and African wild dog — is consistently among Botswana's best. Boat trips push into the lagoons where fish eagles call overhead, while game drives work the woodland edges; together they make Moremi the classic, complete Okavango experience.
Pavlus Recommendations
How our planners would spend a day in Moremi.
Boat into the lagoons
From the water, Moremi is another park entirely: hippo pods, crocodiles on the banks, elephants swimming between islands, and fish eagles crying from the dead trees. The lagoon boat trip is essential.
Work the floodplain edges
Where forest meets floodplain is where the action is — lechwe and impala grazing in the open, and lion, leopard, and wild dog hunting the margins morning and evening.
Watch the fish eagles
The cry of the African fish eagle is the delta's theme song. Moremi's lagoons hold them in numbers, and watching one strike the water for a catch is a safari moment nobody forgets.
