Moreton Island, Australia

A vast sand island off Brisbane where dune-covered wilderness meets the calm waters of Moreton Bay

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Rising from Moreton Bay east of Brisbane, Moreton Island is one of the world's largest sand islands, its interior shaped by towering dunes, freshwater lakes, and stands of eucalypt forest. Much of the island lies within national park, with sealed roads giving way to sand tracks suited only to four-wheel-drive travel. Cape Moreton Lighthouse, Queensland's oldest, stands watch over the northern tip, while the wrecks scattered in the shallows off Tangalooma have become a haven for snorkelers and small fish.

Wildlife defines much of the appeal here, from wild dolphins that gather near the shore at dusk to passing whales visible from headlands during their coastal migration. Ships anchor offshore, with tenders carrying travelers to sandy beaches and walking trails rather than a fixed pier. The island's slower pace and undeveloped landscape offer a quiet counterpoint to Brisbane's skyline, visible in the distance across the bay.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Moreton Island.

Snorkel the Tangalooma Wrecks

Fifteen sunken vessels sit in shallow water just off the beach, forming an artificial reef thick with tropical fish and soft coral. Fins and a mask are enough to explore; calm, clear water makes it accessible even for casual swimmers.

Climb Mount Tempest

One of the tallest coastal sand dunes on Earth rewards a steep but short walk with sweeping views across the island's forest, lakes, and out toward Brisbane's distant skyline.

Watch for Wild Dolphins at Dusk

Bottlenose dolphins have gathered in the shallows off Tangalooma for generations, drawing onlookers to the shoreline as evening light fades. Arrive early to claim a spot along the beach.
