Mühlhausen sits amid the rolling farmland of Thuringia, a walled town whose medieval core has survived largely intact. Cobblestone lanes wind past half-timbered houses and beneath the towers of more than a dozen historic churches, remnants of a prosperous trading past when the town held free imperial status. The Marienkirche, with one of the tallest church towers in the region, anchors a skyline that has changed little over the centuries.
History runs deep here: reformer Thomas Müntzer preached in Mühlhausen during the tumultuous Peasants' War of the 1520s, and the town's role in that uprising is still traced through its museums and preserved buildings.
