About the Port
Perched high above the Mississippi River, Natchez traces its origins to 1716, when French colonists built Fort Rosalie among the Natchez Indians. The settlement grew into a wealthy planter town in the 1800s, and because it surrendered without a fight during the Civil War, its collection of antebellum mansions survived largely intact, offering a rare, unbroken glimpse into pre-war Southern architecture.
Today visitors stroll past grand homes such as Stanton Hall and Longwood, admiring columned porches and ornate interiors that once signaled planter wealth. Working plantations and historic music rooms nearby add further texture to the story. The bluff-top historic district lies within easy walking distance of the riverfront, making Natchez an accessible stop for exploring one of the Deep South's most storied river towns.
