About the Port
Naxos rises from the Aegean as the largest island in the Cyclades, its interior dominated by Mount Zas and dotted with lush valleys and marble-built villages such as Apiranthos. Naxos Town, or Chora, spills down to the harbor in a tangle of narrow alleys and Venetian-era architecture, crowned by a hilltop kastro built by the island's medieval rulers. Just offshore, the Portara, a massive freestanding marble gateway, stands as a landmark visible from arriving ships.
The old town sits within easy walking distance of the pier, making it simple to wander its lanes, shops, and waterfront tavernas without arranged transport. Beyond Chora, beaches like Agios Prokopios and Plaka draw visitors with wide stretches of pale sand, while inland villages offer a quieter glimpse of Cycladic life shaped by farming, marble quarrying, and centuries of layered history.
