Normandy

D-Day beaches and half-timbered towns — history's most moving coastline, plus cider, camembert, and Mont-Saint-Michel

All Guided Tours

About Normandy

Normandy's long green coast holds some of the most consequential ground of the twentieth century: the D-Day landing beaches of June 6, 1944. At Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery above it, at Utah Beach, Pointe du Hoc's shell-cratered cliffs, and the villages the airborne liberated, the events of that morning remain vividly present — and profoundly moving for every generation of visitors.

Beyond the beaches, Normandy is one of France's richest regions to travel: Bayeux with its thousand-year-old embroidered tapestry (and the first town liberated), Rouen's Gothic cathedral quarter, harbor-town Honfleur beloved of the Impressionists, and the apple orchards and dairy farms behind them producing the cider, calvados, and camembert of French legend. And rising from its tidal bay on the region's western edge is Mont-Saint-Michel, the abbey-crowned island that may be Europe's single most astonishing sight.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Normandy.

Stand at the American Cemetery

Above Omaha Beach, 9,380 white markers face home across the Atlantic. With the beach panorama below and the story told well by a guide, it is a place that changes visitors.

See the Bayeux Tapestry

230 feet of eleventh-century embroidery narrate the Norman Conquest like a medieval graphic novel — astonishingly vivid, and the perfect companion piece to the invasion story told in reverse.

Cross to Mont-Saint-Michel

Walk the causeway as the tide races in around the abbey island, then climb the lanes to the cloisters at the summit. Go early or stay late — the crowds thin and the magic doubles.
