Olympia (Katakolon)

Gateway to the ancient Olympic Games, where ruins and the Peloponnese countryside meet the sea

About the Port

Katakolon is a small port town on the northwest coast of the Peloponnese, serving as the maritime gateway to ancient Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games. The archaeological site, a short drive from the pier, holds the remains of the Temple of Zeus, the Temple of Hera, and the original Olympic stadium, along with a museum housing sculptures and artifacts recovered from the sanctuary. The surrounding countryside, planted with olive groves and vineyards, adds a rural counterpoint to the historic ruins.

Beyond Olympia itself, the port opens onto the wider region of western Greece, including routes toward Patras and inland toward Delphi. The town of Katakolon is compact and walkable, with a harborside lined with cafés and shops, making it easy to explore independently or venture farther afield. Its manageable scale and proximity to major antiquities make it a practical base for a day of classical discovery.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Olympia .

Walk the Ancient Olympic Stadium

Step onto the original track where athletes competed over two millennia ago, a highlight of the archaeological site roughly a 20-minute drive from the pier. Pair it with the adjoining museum to see bronzes and sculptures unearthed from the sanctuary.

Explore the Temples of Zeus and Hera

Wander the fallen columns of the Temple of Zeus, once home to a lost wonder of the ancient world, and the older, still-standing Temple of Hera nearby. Allow at least an hour to take in the full sanctuary grounds.

Stroll the Katakolon Harborfront

Skip the taxi line and spend time in the compact port town itself, where a walkable promenade of cafés and small shops backs directly onto the pier. Good option for travelers keeping the day short and unstructured.
