About Positano
Positano pours down its cliffside in a cascade of rose, peach, and terracotta, from the coast road high above to the gray-sand crescent of Spiaggia Grande and its ranks of striped umbrellas. The town's only real 'streets' are stairways and one winding lane of boutiques, lemon stands, and ceramic shops, which is exactly the charm: everything moves at the pace of a stroll, with the Tyrrhenian Sea glittering below every turn.
Once a humble fishing village, Positano seduced writers and film stars in the 1950s and never looked back, but its beauty is timeless — the majolica-tiled dome of Santa Maria Assunta, wooden gozzo boats bobbing offshore, and bougainvillea spilling over every railing. It also makes a spectacular base for the coast's great walks, above all the Path of the Gods, which traverses the cliffs a thousand feet overhead.
Pavlus Recommendations
How our planners would spend a day in Positano.
Walk the Path of the Gods
The Sentiero degli Dei traverses the clifftops from Bomerano toward Positano with the whole coast unrolled below — one of the most beautiful footpaths in Europe, and worth every stair.
Swim from Spiaggia Grande
Cap a hot afternoon the local way: a swim off the main beach, then a lemon granita in the shade while the ferries come and go against the pastel skyline.
Boat the coastline at golden hour
From the water, Positano's full amphitheater reveals itself. An evening cruise past grottoes and the Li Galli islets, town lights coming on, is the Amalfi Coast at its most romantic.
