Qena

Gateway to Dendera, home to one of Egypt's best-preserved ancient temples along the Nile

About the Port

Qena is a Nile-side town in Upper Egypt best known as the gateway to Dendera, site of the Temple of Hathor. Dedicated to the goddess of love, joy, and motherhood, the temple was built during the Ptolemaic period with later Roman additions, and its scale and preservation rank among the finest surviving examples of ancient Egyptian temple architecture.

Visitors typically travel by road from the river port to reach the temple complex, a short journey that offers glimpses of rural life along the Nile. Inside, richly carved columns, painted ceilings, and detailed reliefs reveal centuries of religious devotion and artistic craftsmanship. The site rewards unhurried exploration, with quieter chambers and rooftop areas offering a fuller sense of the temple's scale beyond its grand facade.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Qena.

Marvel at the Hathor-Headed Columns

The hypostyle hall's soaring columns, each capped with the goddess's serene face, set the tone for the temple's scale. Look up at the painted astronomical ceiling before moving deeper into the dim inner sanctuary.

Climb to the Rooftop Chapels

Stairways lead to small rooftop shrines linked to Osiris and rituals of renewal, plus wide views over the temple complex and surrounding fields. It's a quieter counterpoint to the crowded main hall, worth the extra 15-20 minutes.

Find the Cleopatra Relief

On the temple's rear exterior wall, a large carved scene depicts Cleopatra VII and her son Caesarion presenting offerings to the gods. It's one of the few surviving images tied directly to the famous queen.
