Ranthambore

Rajasthan's tiger kingdom — Bengal tigers padding past ancient temples beneath a thousand-year-old fortress

Micato Safaris & India Journeys

About Ranthambore

Ranthambore National Park spreads beneath the ramparts of a mighty tenth-century hill fortress in eastern Rajasthan, roughly midway between Delhi and the palaces of Jaipur and Udaipur. Once the private hunting ground of the Maharajas of Jaipur, it is now one of India's premier tiger reserves — dry deciduous forest, lake-dotted valleys, and ruined pavilions and step-wells that give every game drive the atmosphere of a lost kingdom.

The park's Bengal tigers are its royalty, and Ranthambore is among the best places in the world to see one in the wild: the reserve's tigers are well studied, individually known, and often remarkably indifferent to vehicles as they patrol lakeshores and nap in temple ruins. Around them lives a rich supporting cast — leopard, sloth bear, sambar and chital deer, marsh crocodiles, langur monkeys, and painted storks on the lakes — making Ranthambore the wild counterpoint to India's palace cities.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Ranthambore.

Drive the lake circuits at dawn

Ranthambore's lakes — Padam Talao and its neighbors — are the park's stage. Tigers come down to drink and hunt sambar in the shallows, with the fortress rising behind for the full storybook scene.

Climb to Ranthambore Fort

The thousand-year-old fortress above the park is a marvel in its own right — gates, temples, and battlements with langurs on the walls and vast views over the tiger country below.

Learn the tigers by name

Ranthambore's tigers are individuals with known histories and lineages, and the guides tell their sagas like court chronicles. Knowing whose territory you're crossing transforms every sighting.
