Rhodes

Medieval walls, knightly fortresses, and Aegean light converge on an island where centuries of history are still walkable street by street

About the Port

Rhodes Town's Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site enclosed by roughly four kilometers of medieval walls, unfolds in cobbled lanes shadowed by the Palace of the Grand Master and the Street of the Knights, remnants of the Knights of St. John's long rule. Beyond the fortifications, the harbor and modern town give way to sandy beaches and a mild Mediterranean climate that has drawn visitors for generations. The Old City lies within easy walking distance of the pier, making its landmarks readily accessible on foot.

Farther down the coast, the hill town of Lindos offers another layer of history, its acropolis rising above whitewashed houses and a sweep of turquoise coastline. Together, the medieval core and the ancient heights outside town trace Rhodes's long path from antiquity through the medieval era, framed throughout by the island's characteristic sun and sea.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Rhodes.

Climb to the Lindos Acropolis

Ancient temple ruins crown a rocky headland above whitewashed village houses and turquoise bays, roughly a 45-minute drive from the pier. A steep path or donkey ride leads up from the village, so wear sturdy shoes and go early.

Explore the Palace of the Grand Master

This fortified medieval residence, once headquarters of the Knights of St. John, houses mosaic floors and period rooms behind massive stone walls. It anchors the Street of the Knights and sits an easy walk from the harbor.

Wander the Old City Walls

Roughly four kilometers of medieval fortifications ring cobbled lanes, gates, and towers that reward slow, aimless exploration on foot. Duck into small squares and courtyards away from the main thoroughfares for a quieter feel of the era.
