Robinson Crusoe Island

A remote volcanic outpost in the Pacific whose castaway legend gave the world Robinson Crusoe

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Some 400 miles off the Chilean coast, Robinson Crusoe Island rises from the Pacific as the largest of the Juan Fernández Archipelago, a cluster of volcanic peaks cloaked in rare, endemic vegetation. The island takes its name from the marooning of Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk in the early eighteenth century, an episode long credited as inspiration for Daniel Defoe's classic castaway tale. Steep, green ridges and dramatic sea cliffs give the place an air of isolation still felt today.

The only settlement, San Juan Bautista, is a small fishing village built around a sheltered bay, its economy still tied to the harvest of local lobster. Landing is by tender, and the village sits within easy walking distance of the shore, offering modest museums, a cemetery with ties to Selkirk's story, and trails climbing toward panoramic overlooks. Much of the island lies within a national park and UNESCO biosphere reserve, prized by naturalists for its unusual plant life.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Robinson Crusoe Island.

Hike to Selkirk's Lookout

A steep trail climbs from San Juan Bautista to the saddle where Alexander Selkirk reportedly scanned the horizon for rescue ships; allow 2-3 hours round-trip for sweeping Pacific views.

Explore the Endemic Forest Trails

Paths beyond the village wind through stands of rare ferns and trees found nowhere else on Earth, a highlight for anyone drawn to the island's UNESCO biosphere status.

Sample Fresh Juan Fernández Lobster

Small eateries along the harbor serve the spiny lobster that anchors the local economy, best enjoyed simply grilled while overlooking the fishing boats that caught it.
