About the Port
Samos rises from the eastern Aegean as a lush, mountainous island long associated with the mathematician Pythagoras and the cult of Hera. Its harbor town, Pythagoreio, holds UNESCO World Heritage status and sits within walking distance of the ancient Tunnel of Eupalinos, a 6th-century BC engineering feat, and the nearby Heraion, a sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Hera.
A short sail away, Patmos offers a quieter, more contemplative counterpart. Small and rocky, the island is revered as the place where Saint John is said to have written the Book of Revelation, commemorated at the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian and the Cave of the Apocalypse, both inscribed as UNESCO sites. Whitewashed Chora, clustered around the monastery, rewards those who climb its narrow lanes with sweeping views over the Aegean.

Walk the Tunnel of Eupalinos
Descend into the 6th-century BC aqueduct carved through a mountain by ancient engineers working from both ends. A short taxi or walk from Pythagoreio's harbor, with limited daily entry, so arrive early.
Visit the Heraion Sanctuary
Wander the scattered columns of this ancient sanctuary to Hera, one of the largest temples in the Greek world. Located a few miles from Pythagoreio, easily reached by taxi or a rented car.
Climb to Patmos's Chora
Ascend the whitewashed lanes to the fortified Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, then pause at the Cave of the Apocalypse along the way. The climb from Skala takes roughly 30-40 minutes on foot, or hire a local taxi.
