San Cristobal

Gateway to the Galápagos, where giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies, and volcanic coastlines meet in one compact island

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

San Cristóbal serves as a principal port of entry to the Galápagos archipelago, its small airport and harbor town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno often marking the start or close of an island expedition. Just inland, the Cerro Colorado reserve shelters giant tortoises in a breeding program aimed at preserving the species, with trails winding past corrals where different native tortoises can be observed up close.

Offshore, Pitt Islet rewards a climb to the top of a volcanic tuff cone with sweeping coastal views and one of the archipelago's rare wildlife gatherings, where blue-footed, red-footed, and Nazca boobies share the cliffs alongside frigatebirds and sea lions. The island's compact size makes such contrasts—arid highlands, volcanic rock, and teeming shoreline—accessible within a short excursion, offering a fitting introduction to the natural history that defines the Galápagos.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in San Cristobal.

Snorkel at Kicker Rock

A dramatic split volcanic formation just offshore, Kicker Rock (León Dormido) offers a short boat ride and some of the archipelago's best snorkeling, with hammerhead sharks, rays, and sea turtles often in view.

Hike Cerro Tijeretas

An easy trail above Puerto Baquerizo Moreno leads to a lookout with frigatebird nesting sites and a small monument marking Darwin's 1835 landing; allow about an hour round trip.

Stroll the Malecón at Playa Mann

San Cristóbal's waterfront promenade and adjacent beach are a favorite lounging spot for sea lions, making for an easy, close-up wildlife encounter right in town before or after excursions.
