San Juan Islands, Washington

An archipelago of forested islands and quiet channels where orcas, eagles, and mountain vistas define the passage

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Scattered between mainland Washington and Vancouver Island, the San Juan Islands form a maze of forested shorelines, rocky coves, and calm inland waters framed by the distant peaks of the Olympic and Cascade ranges. The archipelago is known for its resident and transient orca pods, along with harbor seals and bald eagles that frequent its shores, making the surrounding waters a favored setting for wildlife watching.

Passage through the islands unfolds gradually, with forested bluffs, small harbor towns, and driftwood-strewn beaches drifting past on either side. Much of the appeal lies simply in the setting itself, best appreciated from an open deck with unobstructed views of the water and mountains beyond. Binoculars are worth having close at hand, as marine life and birdlife often appear without warning along the route.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in San Juan Islands.

Watch for Orca Pods

Resident and transient killer whales frequent these waters alongside porpoises and seals. Keep binoculars ready and scan calm channels near island shorelines, where sightings often happen with little warning.

Post Up on an Open Deck

The slow passage between forested islands is best experienced outdoors, with sweeping views of driftwood coves and distant mountain peaks. Arrive early for a rail-side spot during the scenic stretches.

Spot Bald Eagles Ashore

Bald eagles nest along the bluffs and rocky points throughout the archipelago, often perched in tall firs or circling overhead. A pair of binoculars turns a passing glance into a proper sighting.
