San Sebastian

A Belle Époque bay city where a crescent beach, Basque old town, and celebrated cuisine meet the Bay of Biscay

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

San Sebastian curves around La Concha Bay on Spain's northern Basque coast, its gilded shoreline framed by Mount Urgull and Mount Igueldo. Grand belle époque facades line the beachfront promenade, a legacy of the city's rise as a fashionable royal retreat in the nineteenth century. Just behind the bay, the Parte Vieja, or Old Town, offers narrow lanes packed with pintxo bars, a lively counterpart to the more formal seafront architecture.

Most visitors explore on foot, since the Old Town and La Concha promenade sit within easy walking distance of the port and central hotels. Evenings favor a slow wander through the Parte Vieja, where small plates and local cider are Basque tradition rather than novelty. The city also serves as a convenient gateway to the wider Basque coast and to nearby France, with Bayonne and Bordeaux reachable by a short overland transfer.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in San Sebastian.

Climb Mount Urgull

A forested hill on the bay's edge holds the Castillo de la Mota and a hilltop statue of Christ with sweeping views over the city and sea. The climb from the Old Town takes about 30-40 minutes round trip and costs nothing to enter.

Ride the Igueldo Funicular

A vintage funicular climbs Mount Igueldo on the bay's western point, delivering postcard views of La Concha's curved shoreline and an old-fashioned amusement park at the summit. The base station sits a short walk or taxi ride from the beachfront.

Go Pintxo-Hopping

Move bar to bar through the Parte Vieja sampling small plates piled on the counters, pairing each with a glass of local txakoli wine or cider. Ordering one or two items per stop and moving on is the local rhythm, not a shortcut.
