Santiago de Compostela

The storied endpoint of the Camino de Santiago, where a great Romanesque cathedral crowns centuries of pilgrimage

About the Port

Santiago de Compostela rises in the hills of Galicia as the destination of the historic Camino de Santiago, a network of pilgrimage routes that has drawn travelers for centuries. Its old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a maze of granite arcades, quiet squares, and stone stairways built for foot traffic long before automobiles. At its heart stands the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, traditionally honored as the burial site of the apostle James, its Romanesque and Baroque facades drawing pilgrims and visitors alike into the plaza below.

Beyond the cathedral, the compact historic quarter rewards unhurried wandering, with narrow lanes leading past covered markets and centuries-old convents. The nearby Atlantic coast offers an easy addition for those with time to spare, including the port city of A Coruña and its Roman-era lighthouse. Most of Santiago's landmarks sit within walking distance of one another, making the old town easily explored on foot.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Santiago de Compostela.

Enter the Cathedral of Santiago

Step inside to see the Portico of Glory and the crypt honoring St. James beneath the altar. Arrive early to beat crowds, and check for the swinging botafumeiro incense censer during Mass.

Wander the Old Town Lanes

Follow granite-arcaded streets past Praza do Obradoiro and the covered Mercado de Abastos market, all easily covered on foot in an hour or two.

Day Trip to A Coruña

Head to the Atlantic coast to climb the Tower of Hercules, the world's oldest working Roman lighthouse, then stroll the seaside promenade; roughly an hour's drive from Santiago.
