About Serengeti
The Serengeti is the archetype of the African plain: short-grass savannah rolling to the horizon, granite kopjes rising like islands, and wildlife on a scale found nowhere else on earth. Tanzania's flagship national park anchors an ecosystem that hosts the Great Migration — well over a million wildebeest plus hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle moving in a year-round circuit that has continued unbroken for millennia.
The migration's calving season fills the southern plains each year around February, when tens of thousands of wildebeest calves are born within weeks of each other and predators gather in numbers to match. But the Serengeti is far more than the migration: its resident lion prides are among the largest and best-studied in Africa, leopard drape the river-line trees, cheetah course the open grass, and every kopje and drainage has its own cast of characters. However many documentaries a traveler has seen, the real thing is bigger.

Follow the migration
Where the herds are depends on the season — massing on the southern plains to calve, filing north in long columns, or braving the river crossings. Your Safari Director will put you in the right place at the right time.
