About the Port
Set on the Danube in northeastern Bulgaria near the Romanian border, Silistra has long been a crossroads of empires. Once a formidable Ottoman fortress and trade center in the 15th century, it later saw fighting during the Russo-Turkish wars of the 1870s, passed briefly to Romania after the Second Balkan War, and finally returned to Bulgarian rule in 1940. That layered past lingers in the town's fortifications, museums, and riverside streets.
Today Silistra offers a low-key introduction to Bulgaria's Danube heritage, with archaeological and historical collections tracing its Roman, Ottoman, and modern eras. The riverfront promenade and town center lie within easy walking distance of the pier, making it a comfortable stop for those who prefer an unhurried pace paired with genuine historical depth.

See the Roman Tomb of Silistra
A beautifully preserved 4th-century painted tomb, discovered beneath the town and ranked among the finest Roman frescoes in the region. It sits a short walk from the center and typically requires advance notice for entry.
Explore Medzhidi Tabia Fortress
This 19th-century Ottoman stronghold on the town's outskirts held off Russian sieges and still has tunnels, bastions, and cannon emplacements to wander. Plan on a short taxi ride and an hour or so to explore the grounds.
Visit Srebarna Nature Reserve
A UNESCO-listed wetland a few miles west of town, home to pelicans, herons, and dense reed beds along a Danube backwater. Best reached by taxi for those with extra time before the ship departs.
