About the Port
Set high on bluffs above the Mississippi River, St. Francisville began under Spanish West Florida rule in the early 1800s before passing into American hands, later flourishing as a cotton port. Its compact historic center preserves two centuries of architecture, and a walk through downtown reveals galleried storefronts and quiet lanes shaded by live oaks. The town's small scale and layered past have earned it a reputation as one of the more picturesque small towns in the South.
Beyond downtown, restored antebellum estates anchor the area's appeal, including Rosedown, known for its extensive gardens, and the Myrtles, long associated with ghost stories and Southern Gothic lore. Ships typically dock within walking distance of the historic center, making it easy to explore on foot before venturing to the surrounding plantation homes and gardens that define this quiet stretch of the Mississippi's east bank.
