Strasbourg

A storybook capital where French and German heritage entwine along half-timbered canals and a soaring Gothic cathedral

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Strasbourg, capital of the Alsace region, sits along the Rhine near the German border, its history and architecture reflecting centuries of French and German influence. At its heart rises the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, a masterwork of Gothic stonework whose spire long dominated the city skyline. Encircled by the Ill River, the Grande Île old town unfolds in a maze of canals and cobblestone lanes, its half-timbered houses painted in soft pastel hues.

The Petite France quarter, once home to tanners and millers, offers some of the most photographed corners of the city, with flower-draped balconies leaning over the water. Beyond its medieval core, Strasbourg carries a modern civic importance as a seat of European institutions, lending it a cosmopolitan, youthful energy. The old town lies within easy walking distance of the river landings, making it simple to explore on foot.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Strasbourg.

Climb the Cathedral Spire

Ascend the narrow stone staircase of Notre-Dame's tower for sweeping views over Strasbourg's rooftops and, on clear days, the Vosges and Black Forest beyond. Arrive early to beat lines and note the astronomical clock inside.

Cruise the Ill River Canals

A boat trip through the Grande Île and Petite France reveals the pastel facades and locks from water level, offering a restful counterpoint to walking the cobblestones. Boats depart near the old town and typically run about 70 minutes.

Wander Petite France on Foot

Stroll the timbered lanes and flower-draped bridges of this former tanners' quarter, then pause at a winstub for a glass of Alsatian wine or a slice of tarte flambée.
