Takamatsu

A serene gateway to the Seto Inland Sea, where an Edo-era garden and scattered art islands invite unhurried discovery

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Capital of Kagawa Prefecture and the principal gateway to Shikoku Island, Takamatsu has served as a political and commercial hub on the Inland Sea since the Edo period. Its centerpiece, Ritsurin Garden, dates from that era and remains one of Japan's finest landscape gardens, its pine-lined paths and koi ponds especially striking in cherry blossom season. The city's waterfront also offers views of the Seto Ohashi Bridge, a major engineering achievement linking Shikoku to Honshu across the strait.

Beyond the city, the Inland Sea's islands, known for contemporary art installations and quiet fishing villages, lie within easy reach by ferry. Ritsurin Garden is a short taxi or bus ride from the pier, making it an accessible highlight for those with limited time ashore. Takamatsu rewards visitors with an unhurried blend of historic landscaping, maritime scenery, and gateway access to Shikoku's broader rail network.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Takamatsu.

Wander Ritsurin Garden

Stroll centuries-old pine groves, teahouses, and koi-filled ponds across this Edo-period landscape garden, one of Japan's most celebrated. A short taxi or bus ride from the pier, it rewards even a compact visit ashore.

Explore Takamatsu Castle Ruins

Wander the moats, stone walls, and turrets of this former waterfront castle, one of Japan's few built directly on the sea. The compact grounds sit near the harbor, easy to fold into a short walk from the pier.

Ferry to the Art Islands

Hop a short ferry to Naoshima or Teshima to see contemporary art installations set among quiet fishing villages and terraced hillsides. Check ferry schedules in advance, as sailings are limited and timing ashore is tight.
