About the Port
Set along the upper Mekong Delta near the Cambodian border, Tan Chau is a small riverside town in An Giang Province known for its weaving traditions and unhurried rhythm of farming and river life. It serves as a gateway to the surrounding delta landscape, where narrow waterways thread through flooded forests and rural hamlets rarely visited by outsiders.
Sampan excursions carry travelers through the Tra Su Forest, home to a bird sanctuary and stands of melaleuca trees rising from still water, or to island villages where farmers tend rice paddies and orchards much as generations before them. In town, trishaw rides pass workshops where local craftsmen continue traditions of silk and textile weaving, while a nearby Cao Dai temple reflects the region's distinctive syncretic faith. As a tender port with limited infrastructure, Tan Chau offers an intimate, low-key counterpoint to Vietnam's larger delta cities.
