About the Port
The Ribbon Reef Region comprises a chain of narrow, elongated reefs strung along the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef off far north Queensland, roughly between Cairns and Lizard Island. Rising steeply from deep ocean water, these reefs create dramatic walls and channels that support dense coral gardens, reef sharks, potato cod, and passing pelagic species. Their offshore position, well beyond the mainland coast, means access is by small boat rather than any fixed pier, and conditions here are often calmer and clearer than reefs closer to shore.
Diving and snorkeling are the main draw, with sites known for coral bommies, swim-throughs, and encounters with large marine life in relatively pristine surroundings. Because the reefs lie far from population centers, the area retains a quiet, untouched character rarely found along more accessible stretches of coastline. Visitors typically spend a day anchored offshore, moving between the water and tender craft, with little in the way of built infrastructure beyond what arrives with each visiting vessel.
Pavlus Recommendations
How our planners would spend a day in The Ribbon Reef Region.
Snorkel or Dive Cod Hole
This famous site draws large potato cod into shallow water for close encounters, plus coral bommies and reef sharks. Access is by tender or dive boat, so confirm timing with crew before the first shore call.
Explore a Coral Wall or Swim-Through
The Ribbon Reefs drop steeply into deep water, creating dramatic walls and narrow swim-throughs thick with coral and fish. Guided snorkel or dive excursions typically run an hour or two and suit varying skill levels.
Scan the Blue for Pelagics
The reef's outer edge attracts passing sharks, rays, and open-ocean species rarely seen closer to the mainland. Spend time in the water near drop-offs and channels, where visibility is often clearest.
