Trier

Germany's oldest city pairs Roman antiquities with the birthplace of Karl Marx along the banks of the Moselle

About the Port

Founded by the Romans in the late 1st century B.C. near the modern border with Luxembourg, Trier is often called the "Rome of the North" for its remarkable concentration of ancient remains. The Porta Nigra, a massive blackened stone gate, stands as one of the best-preserved Roman city gates north of the Alps, while the ruins of the Imperial Baths recall the city's importance as a provincial capital. Its historic core, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, also holds the house where Karl Marx was born.

Walking routes link these landmarks within the compact old town, an easy stroll from the pier along the Moselle. Cobbled lanes, a Romanesque cathedral, and market squares built up over centuries add further layers to a city where Roman engineering and later German architecture sit side by side, rewarding those who wander at an unhurried pace.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Trier.

Climb the Porta Nigra

Ascend the weathered tower of this massive Roman gate for views over the old town and a close look at its blackened sandstone blocks, fitted without mortar. It anchors the pedestrian old town, just steps from the main walking route.

Explore the Imperial Baths

Descend into the underground service tunnels and heating chambers of this vast Roman bathing complex, one of the largest north of the Alps. Allow 30-45 minutes to trace the layout of pools and furnaces still visible above ground.

Visit Trier Cathedral and Liebfrauenkirche

Step inside Germany's oldest cathedral, a layered mix of Roman foundations and Romanesque additions, then next door into one of the earliest Gothic churches in the country. Both sit along the walking path through the historic core.
