Troy (Canakkale)

A legendary citadel of myth and archaeology, gateway to Troy's ancient ruins and Gallipoli's storied battlefields

About the Port

Near the port of Canakkale on the Dardanelles, the ruins of Troy rest on a low mound overlooking the strait, its layered walls and reconstructed wooden horse recalling the city long thought to exist only in Homer's Iliad. Discovered in the late 19th century, the site reveals nine successive settlements spanning thousands of years, now preserved as an archaeological park with marked walking paths through ancient fortifications and excavation trenches.

Across the water, the Gallipoli peninsula holds a different chapter of history, its beaches and ridgelines the setting for the WWI campaign of 1915. Sites such as ANZAC Cove and Lone Pine draw visitors to a landscape now maintained as a national park, honoring the soldiers who fought there. Canakkale serves as the practical base for reaching both destinations, with Troy a short drive from the pier and Gallipoli reachable by ferry across the strait.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Troy .

Walk the Nine Layers of Troy

Follow marked paths through overlapping fortification walls and excavation trenches spanning millennia of settlement, a short drive from the Canakkale pier. Allow at least an hour to trace the site's ramps, towers, and the famous wooden horse replica.

Stand at ANZAC Cove

Cross the Dardanelles by ferry to the Gallipoli peninsula and see the narrow beach where troops landed in 1915. A guide is worth arranging to make sense of the trenches, memorials, and ridgelines scattered across the national park.

Visit Lone Pine Memorial

Set on a quiet ridge above the strait, this cemetery and monument marks one of the campaign's fiercest battles and honors the fallen from both sides. Pair it with ANZAC Cove for a fuller picture of the 1915 fighting.
