About Tsavo
Tsavo is Kenya's largest protected area, a wilderness so big it is split in two — Tsavo East and Tsavo West — that together sprawl across the country's southeast between Nairobi and the Indian Ocean coast. This is old, rugged Africa: red-earth plains, volcanic hills and lava flows, doum-palm rivers, and horizons that seem to run forever with only a fraction of the visitors the famous western parks receive.
The park's signature image is its "red elephants," herds stained rust-color by Tsavo's iron-rich dust. Lion, cheetah, buffalo, and some of Kenya's last big-tusked elephants roam here, while Mzima Springs in Tsavo West pours millions of gallons of crystal water from the lava rock each day, drawing hippos and crocodiles to its pools.
