About the Port
Ulsan sits on South Korea's southeastern coast, a modern industrial center known for shipbuilding and automotive manufacturing rather than historic charm of its own. For most travelers, its port serves chiefly as a gateway to the treasures inland, making the city a practical starting point rather than a destination in itself.
About an hour's drive away lies Gyeongju, capital of the Silla kingdom for nearly a thousand years and one of Korea's richest repositories of ancient heritage. Visitors reach sites such as Bulguksa Temple, the Seokguram Grotto with its seated stone Buddha, and the grassy royal burial mounds that rise across the old city center. The stone observatory Cheomseongdae, among the oldest surviving astronomical towers in East Asia, stands nearby. Because Gyeongju is inland, a transfer from the pier is required to explore it.

Explore Bulguksa Temple
A UNESCO-listed Buddhist temple complex with stone terraces, pagodas, and pavilions dating to the 8th century Silla dynasty. Reserve the better part of an hour to wander its courtyards, about a 60-90 minute drive from the pier.
See the Seokguram Grotto Buddha
A serene granite Buddha statue enshrined in a domed grotto overlooking the sea, ranked among Korea's most revered Buddhist artworks. Pair it with Bulguksa since both sit on the same mountain, though a shuttle or short hike connects the grotto's hilltop perch.
Walk the Royal Tumuli Park
Grass-covered burial mounds of Silla kings and nobles rise across central Gyeongju, with several tombs open to view their interior structure at Cheonmachong. An easy, flat stroll that pairs well with a stop at the nearby Cheomseongdae observatory.
