About the Port
Vienne sits on the Rhône River just south of Lyon, in a setting first settled by the Allobroges, a Gallic tribe, before becoming a prominent Roman colony under Julius Caesar around 47 BC. Its position on the river made it a key stop for trade and travel, and the town retains a well-preserved layer of Roman and medieval landmarks, from ancient temples to later religious architecture, that reward a leisurely stroll through its center.
Though Vienne gradually ceded regional importance to Lyon after the Middle Ages, its historic core remains compact and walkable directly from the riverside, making it an easy introduction to the region's layered past.
