About Zion

Zion Canyon turns the desert inside out: instead of gazing down into a gorge, you walk the green floor of one, beneath sandstone walls of crimson and cream rising two thousand feet on either side. The Virgin River carved it all and still runs the canyon's length, lined with cottonwoods that blaze gold in autumn, while mule deer graze the lawns of Zion Lodge and canyon wrens spill their falling song from the cliffs.

Zion's fame rests on two of the world's great walks. The Narrows heads upriver into a slot where the walls close to twenty feet apart and the 'trail' is the river itself — hikers wade through waist-high reflections beneath thousand-foot walls. Angels Landing takes the vertical route: a chain-assisted scramble along a knife-edge fin to a summit perch with the whole canyon at your feet. Between the two extremes lie riverside strolls, hanging-garden alcoves like Weeping Rock, and the high viewpoints of the east rim.
