Day-by-Day Itinerary

9 days through your journey

Day 1

Day: 1

Nestled in the foothills of Mount Meru, tranquil Gran Meliá Arusha sits on 18 evergreen acres of surrounding coffee and tea plantations. Unwind after your flight and prepare for the next day’s journey.

Day 2

Day: 2

Fly to Tarangire National Park, a land of giants where herds of up to 300 elephants and ancient baobab trees showcase nature's grandeur. The park’s most outstanding feature is the Tarangire River, the only reliable dry-season source of water available to wildlife in a vast stretch of Tanzania's Rift Valley, ensuring this park is home to the second-highest concentration of wildlife in the country after the Serengeti. Transfer to your camp, set in a secluded area of the park for a more exclusive safari experience. Swala Camp's large tents are built on raised decks under umbrella acacia trees overlooking a popular watering hole. The layout of this eco-friendly abode is very open, with resident herds of impala often grazing in camp. Settle in before setting out on your first game drive.

Day 3

Day: 3

Embark on morning and afternoon game drives to explore Tarangire National Park. Look out for a stunning concentration of animals — herds of elephants, impala and zebras — along with pythons or the twitching tail of a leopard, possibly lurking above in a sausage tree. Upon returning to camp, take a refreshing cool down in the pool before dinner.

Day 4

Day: 4

Fly to the Serengeti, one of the planet's biggest and most iconic wildlife havens. Stretching all the way from the Ngorongoro Highlands to Lake Victoria (an area almost the size of New Jersey), it presents the oldest and largest ecosystem on the planet. It is home to more than three million large animals across dozens of species, including enormous herds of wildebeest and zebras along with the predators who stalk them. Transfer to your camp, set among sweeping grasslands, open plains and rocky kopjes. Kichakani Camp affords a front-row seat to the annual Great Migration and the Serengeti’s year-round wildlife spectacle.

Day 5

Day: 5

Revel in true safari country, searching for iconic species such as lions, leopards, Cape buffalo and elephants, as well as giraffes, gazelle and zebras. Along the rivers and rocky outcrops, you may also spot some of the Serengeti's more diminutive denizens, such as leopard tortoises and rhinoceros beetles.
Day 6

Day: 6

Fly to Kenya’s Maasai Mara, the next stage of your adventure, is virtually synonymous with safari – surely among the most scenically lovely, biologically diverse and culturally rich regions in Africa. Amid this dizzying swirl of natural beauty and drama, Olonana Lodge is a hideaway of rare elegance and serenity, presiding over a prime position on a private stretch of the Mara River. Take to the plains for your first game drive here this afternoon.

Day 7

Day: 7

Start your day early with a hot beverage before joining your guide for a morning game drive. Watch as the animals stir to life and start their day. Return for a late breakfast and some time to relax by the pool or indulge in an in-room massage. Late in the afternoon, embark on an evening game drive that culminates with stunning views of the setting sun. You may also wish to visit the Kenya Wildlife Service Rhino Sanctuary (for an additional cost), to gain insight into these rare and amazing creatures.

Day 8

Day: 8

Venture forth on a morning game drive or enjoy an optional hot air balloon ride (at an additional cost), viewing the Maasai Mara and its wild inhabitants from a new perspective. On your game drives today, explore another slice of the Mara’s 500 square miles of savannas, woodlands and tree-fringed rivers. You may observe crocodiles basking in the sun, see ever-alert hippos wallowing in muddy water and perhaps catch the antics of a mischievous monkey overhead. Watch, too, as African elephants rumble along the forest edge and giraffes snatch leaves from branches high above.

Day 9

Day: 9

Fly to Nairobi, where you relax in a reserved dayroom before transferring to the airport for your departing flight.
