Hawaiian malasadas date back to the 19th century when an influx of Portuguese sugar workers arrived in Hawaiʻi. In 1952, the grandson of Portuguese immigrants from the Azores Islands, Leonard Rego, opened a bakery and was the first to use island fresh eggs to make them golden brown on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside. The treat has grown in popularity and is a must-try when in the Hawai’i!
