Day 2
Today, you embark on a guided tour that focuses on
Essaouira’s rich history. Its islands were inhabited as early as the
seventh century BC. Pottery found here proves the presence of
both Carthaginians and Phoenicians. Later, Essaouira became
known during the Roman Empire for the extraction of crimson
dye. The city was eventually conquered by the Muslims in the
10th century. The Portuguese fortified it in the 16th century and
named it Mogador, and in 1506 the Portuguese king Manuel built
an impressive fortress in the area. During your explorations, you
also visit the sizable Jewish Quarter; the Jewish community greatly
contributed to the city’s economic, social and cultural development.
Essaouira’s diverse origins lend the city its unique character, evident
in its rich folk traditions, art and handicrafts. Even today, the most
famous of Morocco’s artists, musicians and intellectuals originate
from Essaouira, and each summer, a festival is held highlighting the
city’s lively artistic character.
Day 3
Today you return to Marrakech, where your onward journey
continues.
