Spend a half-day with your local guide exploring the remnants of Imperial Rome, one of the world’s mightiest empires. Begin at the Flavian Amphitheater, more commonly known as the Colosseum, which once held 50,000 spectators who reveled in public spectacles and gladiatorial contests. Continue to the Roman Forum, containing the tomb of Romulus. Your afternoon is at leisure.

Created as a result of the Lateran Treaty in 1929 between Pope Pius XI and the Italian government, the Vatican is the world’s smallest independent state. Explore the treasures of the Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel, with its stunning frescoes by Michelangelo. Discover St. Peter's Basilica, erected over the tomb of the crucified St. Peter, who is thought to be the first pope. On the way back to your hotel, stop briefly to view the fortress of Castel Sant’Angelo, built as the tomb for Emperor Hadrian and his family.
