About the Port
St Kilda lies far out in the North Atlantic, at the western edge of Scotland's Outer Hebrides, and ranks among the country's most remote inhabited-turned-abandoned outposts. Am Baile, the main village on Hiraga, sits below dramatic sea cliffs and grassy slopes where drystone cleits, once used for storing food, still dot the landscape. The islands hold UNESCO World Heritage status for both their rugged natural beauty and centuries of human history, and they shelter one of Europe's largest seabird colonies, including vast numbers of puffins and gannets.
Landing here depends entirely on calm seas, as there is no harbor shelter and boats anchor offshore before ferrying visitors ashore by tender. The short walk through the old village gives a vivid sense of the isolated crofting life once led here, abandoned in the early twentieth century. Steep terrain and unpredictable weather reward those who come prepared, with sweeping Atlantic views and a rare sense of true remoteness.
Pavlus Recommendations
How our planners would spend a day in Am Baile.
Explore the Abandoned Village
Follow the single street past roofless stone cottages and hundreds of cleits built into the hillside, a haunting record of the crofting community evacuated in 1930. Allow 30-45 minutes on foot from the landing point.
Spot Puffins and Gannets
Scan the cliffs and slopes around the village for puffins burrowed into the turf and gannets wheeling offshore, part of one of Europe's largest seabird colonies. Bring binoculars, as nesting birds cluster on the steep ledges above the bay.
Climb Toward Conachair's Slopes
For those with sturdy footing, the grassy rise above the village opens onto sweeping Atlantic views and some of Britain's highest sea cliffs. Weather and time ashore permitting, this is the payoff for reaching such a remote outpost.
