About the Port
Antarctic Sound stretches between the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula and the outer islands of the Weddell Sea's edge, a channel often called Iceberg Alley for the immense tabular icebergs that drift through its waters. Calved from distant ice shelves, these flat-topped giants create a stark, ever-shifting seascape of white and deep blue, framed by snow-covered slopes and dark volcanic rock.
Wildlife is a central draw, with Adélie penguin colonies nesting on exposed shoreline and seals hauling out on ice floes, while seabirds trace the cliffs overhead. Landings depend entirely on ice and weather conditions, so access varies from call to call, reached only by small landing craft rather than any pier or dock. Visitors should come prepared for cold, wind, and quickly changing conditions in one of the more remote reaches of the continent.
