About the Port
Piraeus, the port of Athens, has served as the city's maritime gateway since antiquity and today opens onto one of the world's richest concentrations of classical heritage. Chief among its landmarks is the Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site crowned by the Parthenon, whose marble columns have overlooked the city for roughly 2,500 years. Nearby, the Acropolis Museum houses artifacts recovered from the site, while the Plaka district offers narrow lanes, tavernas, and shops beneath the citadel's shadow.
Beyond the ancient core, Athens moves at a modern pace, its cafés, markets, and neighborhoods reflecting centuries of continuous life layered atop antiquity. Piraeus lies a short transfer from central Athens, making the city's major sites readily accessible for a day ashore. Travelers with extra time often find Pnyx Hill, opposite the Acropolis, a rewarding spot for unobstructed views of the Parthenon.

How our planners would spend a day in Athens .
Explore the Ancient Agora
Wander the marketplace where Socrates once debated philosophy, still ringed by the well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus. It's a short walk from Plaka and pairs naturally with a stop at the nearby Temple of Olympian Zeus.
Watch the Changing of the Guard
In Syntagma Square, kilted Evzones perform a slow, ceremonial changeover in front of Parliament, an easy add-on stop between the metro and central Athens sightseeing.
Browse Monastiraki Flea Market
This bustling maze of stalls near the metro station sells antiques, sandals, and Greek worry beads (komboloi), with excavated ruins visible right in the station itself.
