About the Port
Avatoru sits on Rangiroa, one of the largest atolls in the world, where a slender ring of coral and palm-fringed motu encloses a lagoon so expansive that its far shore disappears over the horizon. The village takes its name from one of two navigable passes cutting through the reef, channels where tidal currents draw pelagic fish, dolphins, and sharks into view for snorkelers and divers. Black pearl farms and small vanilla plantations round out the local economy, offering a glimpse of Tuamotuan life beyond the beaches.
Because the atoll has no deep-water harbor, ships anchor offshore and guests reach the village by tender. From the landing, the settlement's coral-sand lanes, modest church, and lagoon-side cafés are easily explored on foot, with calm swimming coves close at hand for those content to simply linger in the water.
