Beijing (Tianjin)

Gateway to Beijing's Forbidden City and Great Wall, reached through a historic treaty port on China's northern coast

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Tianjin serves as the maritime gateway to Beijing, sitting on the Bohai coast roughly a hundred miles from the capital. Once a foreign treaty port, the city retains a distinctive mix of European-style concession architecture alongside modern towers, and its riverside promenades and colonial-era streets reward those who linger before or after the inland journey. The port itself is a working harbor, with the historic core located a distance away by road.

Most travelers use Tianjin as a launch point for day trips into Beijing, where the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, and nearby sections of the Great Wall await. The transfer takes a few hours each way, so early departures make the most of time in the capital. Travelers who prefer to stay closer to the coast can instead explore Tianjin's own blend of history and contemporary energy.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Beijing .

Walk the Great Wall at Mutianyu

A restored, less-crowded section of the wall roughly two hours from port, with cable-car access and sweeping mountain views; best attempted only if the itinerary allows a very long day.

Tour the Forbidden City

The vast imperial palace complex at Beijing's heart takes at least two hours to cross; arrive early since it's paired with Tiananmen Square on most day trips and lines build quickly.

Stroll the Italian Concession

For those staying near the coast, this restored quarter of colonnaded villas and cafés near the Hai River makes an easy walk and captures Tianjin's treaty-port character without the long transfer.
