About the Port
Qassiarsuk, known in Norse history as Brattahlid, sits on a sheltered fjord in southern Greenland where Erik the Red is believed to have established one of the earliest Norse settlements over a thousand years ago. Scattered turf-wall ruins, a reconstructed longhouse, and a small replica of an early Christian church recall this brief but significant chapter of North Atlantic exploration. Today the settlement is a tiny farming community, home to sheep pastures set against steep granite peaks and glacial water.
Visits typically arrive by tender given the shallow, unimproved landing, with the historic site and modern hamlet within easy walking distance of the shore. The setting rewards travelers with sweeping fjord views, a strong sense of isolation, and tangible traces of Norse-era life rarely found elsewhere in the region.
