Cephalonia, Greece

Rugged Ionian cliffs, turquoise coves, and villages rebuilt with quiet resilience define Cephalonia's timeless appeal

About the Port

The largest of the Ionian Islands, Cephalonia rises in dramatic limestone ridges above some of Greece's most photographed beaches, including the sweeping curve of Myrtos. Ships typically call at Argostoli or Sami, both gateways to a landscape shaped by earthquakes, seafaring history, and pine-covered slopes climbing toward Mount Ainos. Underground, the island holds surprises: Melissani Cave's sunlit lake and the stalactite chambers of Drogarati draw visitors into its limestone depths.

Inland, whitewashed villages and a Venetian-era fortress near Assos recall centuries of Venetian and British influence, while Fiscardo, spared by the 1953 earthquake that leveled much of the island, preserves handsome neoclassical façades along its harbor. The port town center is generally within easy walking distance of the pier, making it simple to wander waterfront cafés before venturing farther. Cephalonia rewards travelers with a blend of dramatic coastline, cave exploration, and unhurried island life.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Cephalonia.

Swim at Antisamos Beach

A pebble-and-turquoise cove just minutes from Sami by taxi or rental car, backed by pine-covered hills. Its calm, clear water makes it an easy add-on after cave visits.

Taste Robola Wine

Cephalonia's signature white grape thrives on the limestone slopes of Mount Ainos; small family wineries near Argostoli offer tastings and cellar tours. Reserve ahead if time in port is limited.

Cross the Drapano Bridge

This stone causeway links Argostoli to the Koutavos lagoon, near the curious Katavothres sea mills where seawater vanishes into sinkholes. A short, flat stroll from the pier worth the detour.
