About the Port
The largest of the Ionian Islands, Cephalonia rises in dramatic limestone ridges above some of Greece's most photographed beaches, including the sweeping curve of Myrtos. Ships typically call at Argostoli or Sami, both gateways to a landscape shaped by earthquakes, seafaring history, and pine-covered slopes climbing toward Mount Ainos. Underground, the island holds surprises: Melissani Cave's sunlit lake and the stalactite chambers of Drogarati draw visitors into its limestone depths.
Inland, whitewashed villages and a Venetian-era fortress near Assos recall centuries of Venetian and British influence, while Fiscardo, spared by the 1953 earthquake that leveled much of the island, preserves handsome neoclassical façades along its harbor. The port town center is generally within easy walking distance of the pier, making it simple to wander waterfront cafés before venturing farther.
