About the Port
The Davis Strait separates the eastern coast of Baffin Island from western Greenland, forming part of the historic sea route between the Atlantic and the Canadian Arctic. Named for English explorer John Davis, who charted the waters in the late sixteenth century, the strait has long served as a passage for whalers, explorers, and, in recent decades, expedition voyages seeking access to the high Arctic. Its cold currents carry drifting ice from Baffin Bay southward, creating shifting seascapes of icebergs and open water.
