About the Port
Denali National Park and Preserve spans more than six million acres of taiga forest, tundra, and glacier-carved valleys in the heart of Alaska's Interior. The park takes its name from the Athabascan word for the towering peak that crowns the Alaska Range, visible on clear days above a landscape roamed by moose, caribou, Dall sheep, wolves, and grizzly bears. A single road threads into the park's interior, limiting vehicle traffic and preserving the sense of untouched backcountry.
Most visits begin with the approach itself, often by rail or road through the Interior's forests and river valleys, before settling into lodges near the park entrance. Wildlife-viewing excursions by bus or van remain the classic way to experience the terrain, while riverboat trips and cultural stops along the way offer glimpses of Athabascan traditions and Alaska's frontier history. Denali is a landlocked destination reached overland, making it a natural extension for travelers continuing on from Alaska's coastal ports.
