About the Port
Tucked into a remote fjord on the edge of the Westfjords, Djúpavík is little more than a handful of buildings set against dramatic cliffs and dark water. Its centerpiece is a vast herring factory, once among the largest of its kind in Iceland, now abandoned and left to rust quietly inside its cavernous concrete halls. The contrast between this industrial relic and the surrounding wilderness gives the settlement an eerie, evocative character found in few other places.
Visitors can walk through the old factory on a guided tour, taking in the towering machinery and empty processing rooms that once handled tons of herring during the industry's boom years. Beyond the factory, walking trails lead into the surrounding hills and along the fjord, offering sweeping views of the water and cliffs. The village sits directly on the shoreline, making it an easy walk from the landing point into its center.
