About the Port
Flatey sits in Breiðafjörður, the wide bay off Iceland's northwest coast, and ranks among the region's largest islands despite its modest size. Its wooden houses date back more than a hundred years and remain remarkably intact, giving the settlement an unhurried, almost storybook character. Once home to a medieval monastery and a center of learning that produced important Icelandic manuscripts, the island now supports only a handful of year-round residents amid open meadows and rocky shoreline.
No cars disturb the quiet, and the entire settlement can be explored on foot from the small harbor where boats put in. Visitors wander past pastel facades and a modest church, watch seabirds along the coast, and take in views across the bay's scattering of islets. The pace here rewards slow exploration, offering a rare glimpse of rural Icelandic life largely unchanged by time.
