About the Port
Galle's fortified old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Sri Lanka's southern coast, preserves one of Asia's best-kept examples of a European colonial settlement. Built by the Portuguese and expanded by the Dutch in the seventeenth century, Galle Fort encloses a grid of streets lined with whitewashed villas, churches, and a lighthouse, all wrapped in ramparts that face the open sea.
