Sophisticated, stylish and distinctly mid-size, you’ll find the onboard atmosphere is extremely convivial, and with an unrivaled level of personalized service as a result of Oceania Cruises having two staff members for every three guests. As the leader in destination cruising, Oceania Cruises sails to more than 330 ports around the globe.” — Oceania Cruises

Founded in Miami in 2003 by cruise industry veterans Frank Del Rio and Bob Binder, Oceania Cruises set out to prove that a cruise could be judged first and foremost by what lands on the plate. Two decades on, the line calls itself the world's leading culinary- and destination-focused luxury cruise line, and its adults-only ships have become the standard-bearer for travelers who plan voyages around food, wine, and ports rather than waterslides.

The fleet of eight small, luxurious ships carries no more than 1,250 guests apiece, from the intimate original quartet led by Oceania Regatta to the newest vessel, Oceania Allura, delivered in 2025. The trademarked promise of The Finest Cuisine at Sea is no idle slogan: the culinary program was inspired by legendary chef Jacques Pepin and is led by chefs inducted into the prestigious Maitres Cuisiniers de France, with menus that celebrate the ingredients and traditions of the regions each ship visits.

Under the line's Your World Included promise, every fare carries gourmet specialty dining at no extra charge, Wi-Fi, soft drinks and specialty coffees, free laundry, and shipboard gratuities. Destination-rich itineraries span the globe, lingering longer in port than most. For well-traveled adults who prize fine dining, refined mid-size ships, and a sociable but serene atmosphere, Oceania occupies a sweet spot between premium and ultra-luxury.

New & notable: Oceania Allura, the line's eighth ship, was delivered in 2025, and the all-new 1,390-guest Sonata Class debuts with Oceania Sonata in August 2027 — the first of four next-generation ships slated for 2027, 2029, 2032, and 2035.

Oceania Cruises Questions, Answered

What is Oceania Cruises?

Oceania Cruises is an upper-premium cruise line occupying the niche between premium lines like Celebrity and luxury lines like Regent Seven Seas or Silversea. Founded in 2002, Oceania is owned by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings and built its brand around a single promise: “The Finest Cuisine at Sea.” Their ships are mid-size to smaller (684–1,250 guests), itinerary-intensive, and designed for experienced travelers who want exceptional food, destination depth, and an unpretentious but sophisticated atmosphere. Culinary legend Jacques Pépin — Oceania’s founding Executive Culinary Director — now serves as Executive Culinary Advisor and is genuinely involved in menu development.

How does Oceania compare to Celebrity and Viking Ocean?

Oceania sits in a distinctive position:

  • Oceania vs. Celebrity: Oceania is more destination-focused with smaller ships and a superior culinary program. Celebrity has a more contemporary onboard experience, better entertainment, and newer ships. Celebrity’s Always Included pricing is roughly comparable to Oceania’s Simply More in terms of inclusions breadth, but Oceania wins convincingly on food quality.
  • Oceania vs. Viking Ocean: Very similar market positioning — both destination-focused, adult-only, sophisticated travelers. Viking’s inclusions are slightly more comprehensive (shore excursion included per port on Viking); Oceania’s cuisine program is generally considered superior. Viking ships are newer (post-2015); Oceania’s R-class ships are older but well-maintained.
Oceania is the line to choose when dining quality is your primary priority. No comparable line at this price point matches Oceania’s culinary investment.
Is Oceania Cruises worth the price?

For the right traveler — someone who loves food, values destination depth, and prefers an adult-focused atmosphere — Oceania delivers exceptional value. The culinary program alone justifies the price premium over Celebrity or Princess. When you factor in the Simply More shore excursion credit and included beverages with meals, plus the fact that gratuities are included, the all-in cost compares very favorably to premium lines where those items are charged separately.

Oceania is not the right choice if you want a high-energy onboard entertainment scene, large waterpark-style amenities, or the lowest possible price. But for culinary travelers and destination enthusiasts, it delivers one of the best-value propositions in the industry.

Who owns Oceania and what is their history?

Oceania Cruises was founded in 2002 by Frank Del Rio and Joe Watters, two former Crystal Cruises executives. The line launched with two chartered R-class ships and quickly developed a reputation for culinary quality that exceeded its price point. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings acquired Oceania in 2014, and the line has since grown to eight ships including the new Vista-class vessels. Despite corporate ownership, Oceania has maintained its distinct identity and culinary culture — Jacques Pépin’s involvement has been continuous since the line’s founding, and he remains active today as Executive Culinary Advisor.

Who is Oceania best suited for?

Oceania attracts a specific type of traveler who tends to:

  • Be an experienced cruiser who has sailed mainstream or premium lines and wants something more destination-intensive
  • Prioritize food quality — genuinely enjoys fine dining and appreciates Jacques Pépin’s culinary philosophy
  • Prefer an adult-focused, quieter atmosphere without large entertainment productions
  • Value port depth over sea days — Oceania itineraries are dense, with many ports per voyage
  • Have no children under 18 (Oceania has no dedicated youth programs and rarely markets to families)
  • Be curious about destinations and enjoy enrichment-oriented voyages
